Hey everyone,
just to take a little break from the gameplay, we offer to you some insight about two other major factions from the world of Everbane.
In the world of Everbane there is not only the church that minsters to the souls of the high born and common folk alike. There are vast forces both within and without the great cities and their orbiting towns that offer salvation, power or knowledge.
Within the six great cities there are also the Colleges, branches of the legendary College of Architects, founded by Franz Kovlang and his retinue of scholars. Similar to how the church expanded out from Paralith, so too did the college, hungry not for souls and salvation but knowledge and learning. The College then created several branches across the new world, where novices, either voluntarily arriving at the gates or stolen from their beds at night, to learn secrets that the church has no business knowing. The College was inspired in part by the scholars of the enlightenment who strove to understand more about our world no matter the cost but also by the Mechanicus of the Warhammer 40,000 game, the somewhat mysterious internal empire of scholars and scientists whose realm of expertise is science and technology.
However there are also darker forces at work in the new world. After the creation of the church there was a short age of rest and reprieve from the darkness and the terrors that lurk therein but in time darkness crept back in. There was a massive schism within the congregation, even between fathers and higher ranked clergy, those who believe only the shards are righteous and holy and those who believe that there are powers and knowledge to be found in the black dust that is all that remains of the Dark Titan. The schism was followed by a short lived holy war to determine which side would be the dominant religion. Soon those who believed in the power of the black dust were defeated and forced from the city of Paralith where they had attempted to take root. Out in the frozen wilds though that seed of heresy did indeed take root and blossomed into a foul fruit. The Esoteric Order of Black Night flourished from a struggling band of starving heathens into a highly organised and a highly dangerous cult that seeks to turn all they might from the light or sacrifice the faithful, which ever option they seek to utterly destroy all from their shadowy mountain dwelling. The cult was inspired in its roots by the schism within the Catholic Church with figures such as Martin Luther and Henry VIII parting ways with Rome but it is also in part inspired by certain real life cults such as Peoples Temple or The Order of the Solar Temple. This being said there were also some extraordinary fictional cults that certainly helped to inspire the vile cultists of Everbane. One such example is The Order of Silent Hill 1. We wanted the cult of Everbane to have the same religious tension and sense of dark malignance as The Order, did we succeed? Let us know!
