Hi folks! It’s the Dev team here again to let you know a little more about the game!
As we all learned in school the world was once rocked to its very foundation by the Black Death! While the world of Everbane fortunately doesn’t have to deal with the horrors of the bubonic plague it is unfortunately not free of plagues. After the Titan’s fall four plagues were unleashed on the already battered world.
The Mind Plague turns its victims into grotesque and deformed mutants that move in vast herds and are only satisfied by extreme violence. When we came up with these guys we first had the image of violent satyrs of ancient myth but felt this lacked the darkness we were looking for and so we tweaked them a little bit. So they became horrifying quivering monstrosities with tentacles or curling rams’ horns and fur.
The victims of the Soul Plague are especially unfortunate as they alone suffer twice over. These soulless plague carriers are the reanimated corpses of those who have died of natural or even unnatural causes. These shambling half frozen zombies were inspired in part by the hordes from George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead and in another part by works like The Last of Us. The shuffling gate and mindless wandering of Romero’s zombies combined with the environmental reactions of TLOU’s clickers.
The Flesh Plague is a rarity, with very few falling to its contagion. Those infected become great hulking wolf-men monsters that stalk through the wintery forests and wild lands of the world of Everbane. We wanted to create something that had the look of classic lycanthropes but with the viciousness and mentality of Peter Stubbe. Thankfully for both the heroes and the everyday common folk of Everbane, the wolves are extremely rare and the chances of being attacked by one even more so, but all know to fear them!
Worst of all though are the bearers of the Blood Plague. Once righteous and pure people now transformed into the foul and heinous Vampyr. Their blood is so tainted by the black dust left by the dark Titan that it run black and thick like hot pitch in the Vampyrs’ veins and they must subsist on the blood of the pure to survive, hiding in plain sight among the masses and whose existence is still a secret known only to those dedicated to their eradication. We wanted something a little more… bite… than the vampires currently at the top of the pop culture pile and so we drew more inspiration from the movie The Lost Boys in terms of aesthetic and elements of Stephen King’s brilliant antagonist from ‘Salem’s Lot; Mr Barlow.
So now you know where the horrifying and disgusting plague-bearers came from and all of us in the team wish you safety as you travel the wilds of Everbane, we hope you don’t encounter any of these monstrous beasts and if you do, that you have a strong arm and a trusty weapon close at hand!
