In our own world much of the medieval period was dominated by a singular power; The Catholic Church and while the world of Everbane does not have the same religious history as we do, it does share the historically powerful church.
The Church of Holy Light was created after the fall of the two titans by a loose but rapidly growing cult of people who believed the shards to be the remnants of the divine Crystal Titan and soon built a glorious cathedral in the heart of the city of Paralith. The newly formed church teaches its followers the way of righteousness, to always walk in the light and to hate those things that lurk in the dark. These teachings, disseminated by Fathers of the church, bearing holy amulets fashioned by small slivers of the Crystal titan’s form, are lent ever more credence by the fact these amulets grant the wearer some small yet potent magical ability.
The church was a fundamental part of reconnecting the cities of the shattered kingdom, spreading from their seat of power in Paralith to the five other major cities and towns or villages. Through the pilgrimage of the Fathers and their acolytes the church reached these villages, towns and cities and established the trade routes and roads needed to navigate the frozen wastes. However with the creation of these roads and the movement of people between these settlements there came attacks by bandits and monsters. It was this, combined with a schism within the faith that led to the creation of the Holy Ordo, an order of the most elite and skilled knights who fight all the enemies of the church and the shards which they revere.
It is the knights of the Holy Ordo who most often prosecute the church’s crusades, whether they be to cleanse the wild lands of plague-bearers or to fight the vile cultists that are the offspring of that hateful schism. With blade and flame they light up the night and drive the horrors back into the dark.
However this illustrious order does not accept all who desire to join their ranks, only those who prove themselves worthy through marshal skill and resilience are accepted.
Much like the church, the Holy Ordo was in part inspired by a real world counterpart, that being the Swiss Guard, the elite solidary that guards the pope and the Vatican. However they are not alone in prosecuting the church’s wars. Hidden away in the vaults far below the great cathedral of Paralith, the Inquisia plans and strikes out in the shadows against only the vilest of entities. Originally created to eradicate the Vampyrs, the Inquisia’s mission statement has been expanded to include those creatures which in many ways could be considered much worse than the blood suckers. These too were inspired by religious organisations, namely the Spanish inquisition that terrorized Europe for nearly 400 years, yet they were also partly inspired by the Emperor’s Holy Inquisition from Warhammer 40,000.
Where will you stand in the war for light and dark?
